By-products from a jumble of fixations, my creative efforts are an attempt to curate and make use of noisy mental clutter; some of it dating back to when I first picked up a crayon.
I returned to painting after a twelve-year holiday, depicting forgotten corners and unlovable buildings in my then home of outer West London; sights that could at any moment disappear uncelebrated. This commemorative urge has mutated over time, now encompassing some of the more obscure, cobwebbed and nerdish aspects of popular culture. I have a liking for the uncanny, particularly that which can be found in the mundane when you’re in the right state of mind; Low Strangeness if you like.
The pictures tend to be small, painted with oil on wood panel, giving them a postcard-like character. This feels appropriate for the subject matter and I like the way diminutive art encourages a zoned-in, close-up engagement from any potential viewer. Recent projects have demanded a larger scale approach and I’ve begun branching into 3-D, mixed media and model making when the idea requires it.
